The Opportunity
In Roche’s Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development organization (pRED), we make transformative medicines for patients in order to tackle some of the world’s toughest unmet healthcare needs. The pRED Data & Analytics team is the bridge between digital technology and science, and brings together all competencies required to design, build, operate and evolve our digital landscape and the pRED-wide data backbone. We enhance the full scientific data pipeline from structured data capture to powerful data integration and efficient data interrogation in order to create and develop successful drug molecules as efficiently as possible.
As an intern in pRED Data & Analytics, you will be part of the RNAHub, a multidisciplinary research community that brings together scientists from all across pRED, with the ultimate goal of developing novel oligonucleotide-based therapeutics as part of Roche’s mission to create transformative medicines for patients all around the world.
During your internship you will
gain practical experience in developing scientific software applications
assist in gathering business requirements
creating new or improving existing technical processes
help extract, transform and visualise complex data
Additionally you have the opportunity to expand your knowledge of chemistry, biology and preclinical drug discovery in general. At the end of the internship you will have mastered development best practices within a research organization.
Who you are
You are enrolled as a Master's / PhD Student or have recently completed (within 12 months prior to the start date) a bioinformatics, computer science (or similar) degree and are looking for a 6-month internship.
You are used to working in a team environment.
Your profile is rounded off by having good communication skills in the English language.
We are looking for a candidate with a background in computer science or a similar field of studies who brings:
Exposure to development of analytical applications (e. g. Dash, Steamlit, Django, Nuxt, Next, Rshiny etc.)
Familiarity with development of REST APIs (e. g. FastAPI, flask, plumber, etc.), experience with databases (e. g. Document databases, SQL etc.), knowledge of version control systems (preferably Git)
Additionally helpful but not mandatory are knowledge of and interest in:
Best practices and testing frameworks in software development
Building custom visualisations and interacting with users to validate them
Working with biological and chemical data (e. g. pathway network representations, bioinformatics, molecular representations like HELM / SMILES)
Due to regulations Non-EU/EFTA citizens must provide a certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory as part of the application documents. Furthermore, they need to be enrolled during the entire duration of the internship.
This internship is not suitable for a Bachelor or Master thesis.
